    Protein Summary

    The gene NP_241368.1 from Bacillus halodurans encodes a ribonucleoside-diphosphate reductase  EC:1.17.4.1 (74% sequence identity with the homologous enzyme from Bacillus cellulosilyticusPF00268.  Alternative name: ribonucleotide reductase (RNR).  The enzyme belongs to the class of all  alpha proteins and adopts a ferritin-like fold type SCOP47240.  The enzyme catalyzes the following reaction: 2'-deoxyribonucleoside diphosphate + thioredoxin disulfide + H(2)O <=> ribonucleoside diphosphate + thioredoxin.  This is the formation of deoxyribonucleotides from ribonucleotides.  The reaction catalyzed by RNR is strictly conserved in all living organisms.  RNR plays a critical role in regulating the total rate of DNA synthesis so that the ratio of DNA to cell mass is constant during cell division and DNA repair.
