    The Reut_B5045 (YP_299237.1) gene from Ralstonia eutropha encodes the enzyme cysteine dioxygenase type I PF05995 EC:1.13.11.20.  The enzyme contains cupin-like domain RmlC SCOP51182.  The enzyme catalyzes the following reaction: L-cysteine + O(2) <=> 3-sulfinoalanine.  This reaction is a branch-point in cysteine catabolism, where it can follow two pathways resulting in the formation of taurine or sulfate.  3-sulfinoalanine-dependent pathway of taurine metabolism follows the synthesis of hypotaurine (2-aminoethane sulfinate), which is subsequently oxidized to taurine.
