    Protein Summary

    The gene AF2017 from Archaeoglobus fulgidus encodes the NP_070841.1 protein, a 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (3-HCDH) EC:1.1.1.35 COG1250 (alternative names: beta-hydroxyacyl dehydrogenase, beta-keto-reductase). Its sequence shows two domains, the N-terminal belonging to the HCDH NAD binding domain (PF02737), and the C-terminal  from the HCDH C-terminal domain group (PF00725).

    The 1zej structure N-terminal domain (1-160) belongs to the class of alpha and beta (a+b) proteins and reveals NAD(P)-binding Rossmann-fold domain fold type, inside the 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase-like N-terminal domain family (SCOP51734); the C-terminal domain (163-262) belongs to the 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase C-terminal domain-like superfamily, HCDH C-domain like family. According to DALI, 1zej shows structural similarity to PDB:1wdk (Z=26), PDB:2dpo (Z=26), and PDB:3a97 (Z=26).

    3-Hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenases are classified as oxidoreductases.  They are involved in fatty acid metabolic processes.  Specifically they catalyze the third step of the beta oxidation of L-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA by NAD+. The reaction converts the hydroxyl group into a keto group: (S)-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA + NAD+ --> 3-oxoacyl-CoA + NADH + H+.
