    Protein Summary

    The TM0723 gene of Thermotoga maritima encodes a protein of uncharacterized function (PF01894, COG0432). The family shows a wide species distribution with over 500 sequences in over 400 species including eukaryotes (sea anemone, fruit fly, mosquito, tapeworm, fungi, rice and yeast), prokaryotes (actinobacteria, bacteroidetes, chloroflexi and firmicutes) and archaea. A number of other structures solved as part of the worldwide Structural Genomics initiative display strong structural (main-chain rmsd between 0.6-1.8 Å over 118-139 residues) and sequence similarity (sequence identity 31-60%) with TM0723 including 2p6c, 1vph, 2p6h, 1xbf, 1vmf and 2cu5. Pre-SCOP describes the structure as adopting a novel fold termed YjbQ-like.

     

    The protein architecture of another family homolog from smut fungus (Q4PFT5_USTMA) contains PX (PF00787), PH (PF00169) and RhoGAP (PF00620) domains, suggesting a function in signal transduction implicating the cytoskeleton.

     

    Thiamin phosphate synthase activity has been shown [Ref], however this is probably not the primary function of this family.
