    The gene 2648890 from Archaeoglobus fulgidus encodes the enzyme alanine dehydrogenase EC:1.4.1.1 COG0686, a member of ornithine cyclodeaminase family PF02423.  The enzyme belongs to the class of alpha and beta (a+b) proteins and reveals NAD(P)-binding Rossmann-fold domain fold type SCOP51734. The enzyme catalyzes the follwing reaction: L-alanine + H(2)O + NAD(+) <=> pyruvate + NH(3) + NADH.  The enzyme participates in taurine and hypotaurine metabolism and reductive carboxylate cycle (CO2 fixation).  The structure of the enzyme homologue with bound NAD from Archaeoglobus has been solved 1OMO.
