    Protein Summary

The gene TM1752 from Thermotoga maritima encodes the enzyme endoglucanase PF00150 EC:3.2.1.4 COG4305.  Accepted name: cellulase; alternative names: celludextrinase, endo-1,4-beta-D-glucanase.  The enzyme belongs to the family of alpha and beta (a+b) proteins and reveals TIM beta/alpha-barrel fold type SCOP51350. The enzyme breaks down cellulose to beta-glucose. This type of cellulase is produced mainly by symbiotic bacteria in the ruminating chambers of herbivores.  The structures of several enzyme homologues from different organisms have been solved: 1CEN, Clostridium thermocellum.
