    Protein Summary

The TM0140 gene of Thermotoga maritima encodes an indole-3-glycerol phosphate synthase (IGPS) (EC 4.1.1.48, PF00218), an enzyme catalyzing the fourth step in the biosynthesis of tryptophan. The 1j5t structure comprises a single-domain (beta/alpha) 8 barrel (TIM barrel). With the exceptional of an additional N-terminal helix (missing from TM0140), the structure is essentially identical (main chain rmsd 1.6 Å over 207 residues) with the IGPS of Sulfolobus solfataricus, another hyperthermorphile, for which the active site and catalytic mechanism have been described (Hennig 2002) (Fig. 1).
